CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has condoled the death of the former Prime Minister, V. P. Singh. Describing him as a close friend, the Chief Minister said in a statement here on Thursday that Mr. Singh was a symbol of political decency, culture and lofty ideals. It was during his tenure as Prime Minister that the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal was set up. Despite stiff opposition, he implemented the recommendations of the Mandal Commission, which had provided reservation for Other Backward Classes. Mr. Karunanidhi said that on his request Mr. Singh named the Chennai International Airport terminal after Annadurai and the domestic terminal after Kamaraj. His death was an irreparable loss to the country. The party would observe a three-day mourning from Thursday and the party flags would be flown at half mast, he added. Dravidar Kazhagam president K.Veeramani said Mr.Singh was responsible for ensuring social justice in the country by implementing the recommendations of the Mandal Commission. For upholding principles, Mr.Singh sacrificed power. The party will observe a three- day mourning .
