BSP councillor is vice-chairperson

VIZIANAGARAM: Lenka Mohan (36th ward) of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has been declared elected in the election held to the post of vice-chairperson of the Vizianagaram Municipality on Friday. The election scheduled on November 11 and 12 was postponed due to lack of quorum.

In the voting conducted by Presiding Officer S. Swamy Babu, 23 councillors of both the BSP and the Congress raised hands in favour of Mr. Mohan. While Karanam Gangadhar of the Congress proposed, S.V.V. Rajesh of the BSP seconded his candidature. The Telugu Desam Party, though has only 11 councillors, fielded G. Rama Rao as its candidate. V.S. Prasad, party Floor leader, proposed his name and the former municipal chairperson, P. Kanaka Mahalakshmi, seconded him. He got 10 votes. Three Congress councillors – M. Geetha, P. Vijaya Lakshmi and Y. Kumara Swamy (who was one of the aspirants) – abstained from voting.

Stiff contest

There was a stiff competition for the post from the BSP and the Congress. K. Gangadhar and Y. Kumara Swamy of the Congress, Mr. Mohan and A. Venu of the BSP stayed in the fray till the end. However, after a prolonged discussion with councillors and K. Veerabhadra Swamy, MLA, Minister for Housing Botcha Satyanarayana cleared the name of Mr. Mohan.
