YSR lists steps for BC welfare

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Friday said by increasing the budgetary allocation for Backward Class students from Rs. 348 crore in 2004 to Rs. 1,300 crore now, the government showed that it believed in deeds and not merely words.

Speaking at a function organised by the BC Welfare Department to commemorate the death anniversary of social reformer Jyothi Rao Phule, Dr. Reddy obliquely referred to other political parties’ claims and said Congress alone could ensure benefits reached them.

Realising that education played a key role in shaping the careers of the underprivileged, the government was spending a lot, he said. It has been releasing scholarship amounts and reimbursing the fees that included all professional courses, pharmacy, MBA and MCA courses. A poor orphan girl student, Manemma, said she was pursuing her post graduation, thanks to her admission into Government welfare hostel in Karimnagar.

V. Hanumantha Rao, Rajya Sabha member and convenor of OBC MPs Forum, wanted the Congress to give adequate number of tickets for BCs all over the country.
