STUDY: Principal Secretary for Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Leena Nair, right, with Collector M. Jayaraman, second from right, inspecting breaches at Mudikondan near Tirumarugal. NAGAPATTINAM: Following the damages caused by the heavy rains, Collector M. Jayaraman said that he had requested the State Government to provide Rs. 331 crore as immediate relief. He said this after inspecting various rain-hit areas. Ten people died and 137 houses were damaged in the district on Friday as rains forced over 20 per cent of the district population to seek shelter in government centres. Mr. Jayaraman and Principal Secretary for Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Leena Nair visited the various centres and inspected the facilities. Nearly two tonnes of milk powder were brought from Erode and distributed. Food packets were also provided and a catering centre was opened in Tirumarugal for over 5,000 villagers who were evacuated following breaches in the Mudikondan and Arasalar rivers. A sum of Rs. 10 lakh was distributed as solatium to the family of those who were killed in the rain from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. About 1,200 km of roads were damaged by the rain and the Collector directed the Highways officials to take steps on a war-footing to repair them. He also appointed teams to monitor the breaches and seal them at the earliest. There were complaints of inadequate food and water in some places and the Collector directed the officials to redirect food from other centres.
