One more NSG contingent for Mumbai

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: As operations to flush out terrorists in Mumbai continued for the second day on Friday, the Centre rushed another contingent of the National Security Guard (NSG) commandos to the city.

Briefing reporters here on Friday, Special Secretary (Internal Security) M.L. Kumawat said the total number of NSG commandos airlifted to Mumbai stood at 477.

He said the toll in the serial terror attacks was 124 killed and 284 injured. He said two NSG personnel lost their lives in the operations.

Giving the break-up of foreigners killed, he said three were from Germany, one each from China, Australia and Canada while the identities of two others were yet to be established.

Foreign nationals who sustained injuries included three from Germany, two from the U.S., five from U.K., two from Oman and one each from Finland, Norway, Canada, Philippines, Australia, and Italy while the identities of two others were still not known.

Answering a question, Mr. Kumawat said at least six terrorists could still be holed up at the Taj. He said security personnel had recovered one AK-47, two pistols and some unexploded Chinese-make hand grenades. Though the exact number of terrorists was not known, he said five were killed and one was arrested by the police and security personnel.

Home Minister Shivraj Patil presided over a high-level security review meeting which was attended by National Security Adviser M.K. Narayanan, Cabinet Secretary K.M. Chandrasekhar, Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta, Intelligence Bureau chief P.C. Haldar and other senior officials from the Ministry.

Mr. Kumawat said the meeting broadly discussed short, medium and long-term measures to be taken in a situation like the one in Mumbai and also took stock of the ongoing operations there.

The Civil Aviation Ministry has put all international airports and those in the western region on a state of “high alert.”
