“Crop damage to be assessed soon”

KARUR: Officials from the Revenue, Agriculture and Horticulture Departments would assess the damage caused to the crops due to the ongoing rain havoc, District Collector J. Umamaheswari said here on Friday.

Speaking after a tour of the rain-affected areas including Manavasi, Krishnarayapuram, Kovakulam, Kurichi, Nangavaram, Lalapet and Thanneerpalli where crops such as paddy, banana, betel vine have been submerged due to incessant rainfall over the past few days, Dr. Umamaheswari said that farmers in several areas had a harrowing time as their fields and crops remained under water.

The administration would assess the damage once the water drained off. Officials from the Revenue, Agriculture and Horticulture departments would quantify the damage shortly, she added.

Dr. Umamaheswari directed the Public Works Department officials to take immediate steps to drain water from the paddy fields at Kovakulam and Krishnaraypuram north areas.

The officials discussed the situation on the spot and devised means to drain the fields immediately.

Similarly, the Collector directed the officials to ensure that the betel vine gardens were drained of the excess water in quick time so that the crops could be saved.

Farmers requested her to expedite the crop damage assessment and take steps to get them adequate compensation. She assured them that all possible steps to ameliorate their sufferings would be taken immediately.

Joint Director of Agriculture Durairaj, Deputy Director Thiruvalluvar and Assistant Director of Horticulture Vijayakumar were among those who accompanied the Collector during the visit.
