ANANTAPUR: Minister for Agriculture N. Raghuveera Reddy inspected the works of N. Srirami Reddy drinking water project near Kalyanadurg in the district on Friday evening. He told the agencies executing the project to speed up works so that filtered water could be given to Hindupur and Kalyanadurg towns, at least from December 10. He visited the pump house and three impellers set up on Mudigallu road on the outskirts of Kalyanadurg and directed the project engineers to change the impellers on war footing. General Manager of Mega Engineering Corporation, Venkatesh, and Project Manager (L&T), Harikrishna, explained to the Minister that the impellers were not setting in due to minor variation in the size. The Minister spoke to the Engineer-in-Chief of the project over cell phone and told him to order fresh impellers from the suppliers in Pune. Technical snagsThe project engineers explained the Minister that installation and testing of all eight pump houses was completed. But for the minor technical snags testing of raw water supply till Hindupur should have been completed by now, the Minister felt. They were planning to supply protected water to Hindupur and Kalyanadurg towns and 15 villages each in Hindupur and Madakasira constituencies by December 10. Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy would dedicate the Asia’s biggest rural drinking water project to the people on December 18, tentatively, Mr. Raghuveera Reddy stated. As the works were also completed in Karnataka territory in all respects there should be no intervention in the supply of water once it was commence, he said. PadayatraHe would launch a padayatra from Penna Ahobilam Balancing Reservoir, the take off point of the project, to Hindupur, a distance of about 180 km, on either December 8 or 9 and would reach Hindupur in 10 days covering the entire distance. The engineers assured the Minister that they could test raw water supply to Hindupur in 10 days. The critical components of the project from PABR to Gangavaram and from Gangavaram to Kalyanadurg were functioning satisfactorily. There were three pumps in the pump house near Kalyanadurg.
