Damaged National Highway stretches will be repaired immediately: Baalu

Says four-lane highway corridors have not suffered any damage

TIRUCHI: The damage caused to National Highways stretches in the State by the rain will be repaired immediately, Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R. Baalu said on Saturday.

About 32 km on the Tiruchi-Tindivanam stretch of the Tiruchi-Chennai National Highway, 30 km on the Tiruchi-Dindigul Highway and a few stretches on the Tiruchi-Thanjavur Highway had been damaged.

Only the highway stretches had been damaged, and there was no damage to the newly laid four-lane highway corridors, Mr. Baalu told reporters after inspecting the progress of the work on the bridges being built across the Cauvery and the Coleroon as part of the Tiruchi-Chennai four-lane work.

With the four-lane projects under way on all these highways, the contractors would prepare the estimates for repairs and carry out the work immediately.

Transport Minister K.N. Nehru, Forest Minister N. Selvaraj and MP N. Siva accompanied Mr. Baalu.

The construction of the two bridges would be delayed by 15 days. However, contractors have been asked to complete the work by December-end, Mr. Baalu said.

The road over-bridge coming up across the level crossing at Lalapet on the Tiruchi-Karur Highway would be completed by Pongal.

Ring roads

Mr. Baalu said rings roads would be laid in all cities, which are Corporations. While the roads had been sanctioned for all Corporations other than Chennai, those for the newly formed Corporations would be cleared soon.

The foundation for the Rs.1,500-crore elevated corridor between the War Memorial and Maduravayil in Chennai would be laid by Chief Minister M. Karunandhi shortly.

Maritime varsity

Mr. Karunanidhi would formally inaugurate Indian Maritime University and the maritime complex on January 1. He would also lay the foundation for the administrative buildings of both the university and the maritime complex.
