Ex-Gujarat Chief Minister dead

AHMEDABAD: The former Gujarat Chief Minister, Chhabildas Mehta, died here on Saturday evening following prolonged illness. He was 84.

The cremation will take place here on Sunday.

A very senior leader of the erstwhile Praja Socialist Party, Mr. Mehta later joined the Congress and remained Chief Minister for 13 months from February 1994 to March 1995, after the sudden death of the then Chief Minister, Chimanbhai Patel.

Mr. Mehta joined the Nationalist Congress Party in 2001 and remained its member till the end.
