3.64 lakh evacuated in Tiruvarur district

Lending ears and words: Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin, speaking to the people affected by floods and now given refuge in a school in Salia Mangalam near Thanajvur on Saturday.

TIRUVARUR: Samba and Thaladi crops on 1.34 lakh hectares have been damaged in Tiruvarur district due to the recent rain and floods according to M. K. Stalin, Local Administration Minister.

He told presspersons at Tiruvarur after visiting rain affected areas in the district on Saturday, that a total of 3.64 lakh people have been evacuated and fed in 717 relief camps.

The Minister said that the rain was unprecedented and average rain fall recorded in a week was 350.54 mm. Maximum of 692.23 mm has been recorded in the district.

Damages to crop and infrastructure due to the recent rain and floods has been estimated at Rs. 685 crore. Crop damage is estimated to the tune of Rs. 456.91 crore and damage to roads estimated at Rs. 54.67 crore.

The Minister saw damaged crops at many places and distributed relief materials to those sheltered at a marriage hall at Needamangalam.

Mr. Stalin also inspected road breaches. M. Chandrasekaran, Collector, A. K. S. Vijayan, Nagapattinam MP and Dairy development Minister U. Mathivanan accompanied him during his visit.

Thanjavur

A total of 90,000 people have been evacuated from flood affected areas and fed in 330 relief camps in Thanjavur district, said Minister for Local Administration M. K. Stalin, here on Saturday.

He visited the relief camp set up at Government Higher Secondary School at Saliyamangalam near Thanjavur. Nearly 3,084 persons from Irumbuthalai, Vizhuthiyur, Edavakudi, Palliyur and Kalanchery villages are kept at the camp and fed.

He also said that paddy crop on 1.10 lakh hectares have been damaged in this rain in the district.

He said that assessment of damages is being done.

Respective district collectors will send in their reports to the government, based on which relief and compensation will be provided.

Rs. 100 crore for flood relief

He said that the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has allotted Rs. 100 crore for the whole of Tamil Nadu to provide relief to the flood-affected.

Road damage was extensive in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Cuddalore districts, Stalin said.

Union Minister of State for Finance S. S. Palani Manickam, Dairy Development Minister U. Mathivanan, Nagapattinam MP A. K. S. Vijayan, District Collector M. S. Shanmugham, MLAs Durai Chandrasekaran and Mahesh Krishnaswamy accompanied the Minister on his visit to the affected areas.
