Proud winners: Hosoklu Chinnappa and A.B. Yashoda who won the men’s and women’s trophies, respectively, in Kodagu Cauvery marathon held in Bhagamandala in Kodagu on Sunday. BHAGAMANDALA (KODAGU): The 15th Kodagu Cauvery Marathon, which began at General K.S. Thimayya Stadium in Madikeri and concluded at Bhagamandala in Kodagu on Sunday, evoked a good response. People of Katakeri, Appangala, Bettageri, Karugunda, Cherambane, Kopatti, Bakka and Chettimani villages lined up along the road and cheered the runners. The event in the men’s and women’s sections saw participants not only from across Kodagu, but also from several districts in the State, Hyderabad, Idukki in Kerala, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Wellington. Local schoolchildren and college students participated in the students’ category. The event was sponsored by Bhaskar Achar, who is in the U.S. Co-sponsors Tittu Subbaiah, Cauvery, Saraswati Subbaiah, organisers from the Cauvery PU College in Bhagamandala, Diwakar and Hemant were present. Cultural programmes were presented by schoolchildren at Bhagamandala. Hosoklu Chinnappa of MRC, Wellington, a marathon runner of national fame, won the 42.2 km event with a timing of 2.34:42 hours. The event was flagged off by Deputy Commissioner M.K. Baladevakrishna. A.B. Yashoda, a BPEd. student from the Alva’s College in Moodbidre, retained her title by finishing the 21.1 km distance with a timing of 1.41:11 hours. Ashalata of Katakeri near here won the second prize with a timing of 1.43:36, followed by Satyabhama R. D’Souza from Western Railway, Mumbai, with a timing of 1.48:46. The president of the Bettageri gram panchayat, Ramanna, inaugurated the women’s event at Bakka. Cash prizes were given to top six finishers. Chinnappa was honoured with a cash award of Rs. 50,000. Yashoda bagged a cash prize of Rs. 25,000.
