PUDUCHERRY: In the wake of the terror attack in Mumbai, the government has set in motion the process of speeding up modernisation of police force. “One of the major handicaps of the force is manpower shortage. We have requested the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to immediately consider our proposal to increase manpower. We wanted to induct around 450 more men in different levels of the force,” Home Minister E. Valsaraj told The Hindu. Once the process of increasing the strength was completed, crime and intelligence wing would be separated from law and order, he said. The government also planned to strengthen the Special Branch, which faced severe manpower shortage at present. Personnel attached to the Special Branch would also be given special training in grassroots-level intelligence gathering, Mr. Valsaraj said. Immediately after the Mumbai hostage crisis, the Home Minister convened a high-level meeting to discuss ways to beef up security in the wake of the general threat perception. Senior Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) Manish Kumar Agarwal said that the Union Ministry of Home Affairs had issued a general threat perception to the Union Territory also after the attack in Mumbai. Following the advisory, Director-General of Police A.S. Khan had given a direction to all Superintendents of Police to intensify patrolling and hold consultations with hoteliers and fishermen associations, he said. On Sunday, Superintendent of Police (North) N.T. Sivadasan held a meeting with more than 100 hoteliers and owners of guest houses.
