KOCHI: RLV College of Music and Fine Arts, Thripunithura beat traditional favourites Ernakulam Maharaja’s College and St. Teresa’s College to lift the overall championship at the Mahatma Gandhi University youth festival that concluded here on Sunday evening.

RLV College was way ahead of Maharaja’s College and St. Teresa’s College when the final results were announced. It had sealed the victory by scoring 101 points. St. Teresa’s College emerged runner-up with 83 points followed by Maharajas College with 82 points. Jancy Suraj of RLV College was adjudged as Kalathilakom and M. P. Mithun of RLV College was the Kalapratibha.

Thunderous applause erupted at the Maharaja’s College ground, when the organisers announced that RLV was leading the overall point tally two hours before the valedictory of the fest. It was a historic moment for the college faculty and students, as it was for the first time the college had bagged the overall championship at the annual festival organised by Mahatma Gandhi University Union.

Maharajas College and St. Teresa’s had been sharing the top honours during the last several editions of the students’ festival. But RLV College changed the course of the events when it went ahead of the local favourites Maharajas College by over 10 points by Saturday night. It never looked back after scoring that lead and maintained the winning streak till Sunday afternoon. By 4 p.m., the college ensured that it will finish first in the final leap by winning some of the keenly fought contests in the festival including the group dance event. RLV College overcame fierce competition from St. Teresa’s College to bag the first prize in the group dance competition. Judges said that it was a close finish especially after majority of the teams came up with exciting performances. RLV College maintained its tradition of winning the dance events when it also bagged the first prize in the Folk Dance (group) event. St. Teresa’s College displayed excellent choreography but could not match the outstanding performance by students from the RLV College.

Sunday belonged to RLV College when it brought home victories in both Wind (Western) and on-the-spot painting competitions. Dani J.M. of RLV won the Wind (Western) event. Benedict K.I. of Maharaja’s College came second in the event. Amal Francis won the on-the-spot painting competition. Ramesh Ravi of M.A. College at Kothamangalam emerged second. Results of some of the events: Collage — Ashwini Subramanian of Chinamaya Vidyapeet, Kochi; Cartooning — Rahul R. Nath of MBC College of Engineering, Peerumedu; Clay Modelling — Elizabeth Philip of St. Teresa’s College; Photography — Aswathy Roy of Sacred Heart College, Thevara; Quiz — Renjish H. R, Rakesh.
