Public water taps in Eluru town are subjected to the negligence of the employees of Eluru Municipal Corporation. Since many taps require repairs, huge quantity of water is being wasted from those taps every day. A tap near Lokanadha Elementary School in Gandhi Nagar is found with a cycle tube fixed to it. When the tap is not in use, the tube is folded and tied with a rope. This is a novel idea of the users nearby and we have to thank them for preventing the wastage of precious water. Many users do not take any care to prevent the wastage of water. The officials of the civic body are requested to take steps for undertaking repairs to the defunct taps. Mohammed Nazeeruddin Gandhi Maidan, Eluru Common practiceOf late, the incidents of teachers beating students with footwear have become a common practice in schools and places of higher learning. Recently, a student from Kadapa, who was beaten by his teacher in the classroom, lodged a complaint with the police. As matters stand at present, the teaching community should bear in mind that even in older days there was no such treatment like beating students with footwear. At the most, teachers used to beat children with a cane. They should also realise that such treatment would certainly subject the young minds to untold distress and distraught. There is every need for the Government to impose a ban on the most mean and indecent methods of punishing the students in the classroom by the teachers. I. Subhash Samuel Ulavapadu, Prakasam district Road in bad shapePenchalakona with the deity of Lord Nrusimha is a centre of pilgrimage of importance in Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore district. No doubt, philosophically and spiritually, to reach God is an arduous task. But here the road to Penchalakona is very inconvenient and tiresome. One can understand how bad it is, only after travelling on the road. I request the elected representatives from this district, including the Minister for Tourism, to look into the issue and make arrangements for re-carpeting the road. Once the road is being laid, the place will witness a good number of tourists, which is not only a pilgrim centre but also a place known for its scenic beauty. K. Sujatha Nagaraja Rao Kavali, Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore district Need of the hourAs a result of globalisation, youngsters are able to get jobs in many foreign countries. For this, they need to be fluent in English language, which many people feel is a burden. In fact, English language is a conglomeration of a lot of French, German, Chinese, Spanish and even Japanese words. A few steps including, regularly listening to English news, reading aloud, listening to others patiently and carefully while they are speaking and making continuing efforts to correct oneself, will definitely help people, who want to learn the language. One should keep in mind that English language is an evolving one and a continuous effort is a must to excel in it. Banda Nageswara Rao Chirala, Prakasam district
