Flood gates opened at Sathanur Dam

Staff Reporter

In full flow: Water being released from the Sathanur Dam in Tiruvannamalai.

Tiruvannamalai: Heavy inflow in the last couple of days at the Sathanur Reservoir has raised the water level to 118 feet against the maximum height of 119 feet, forcing Public Works Department officials to open the flood gates.

“We received 6,500 cusecs of water on Saturday and released 2,000 cusecs into the river. After monitoring the inflow and ensuring that low-level areas are not affected down stream, we will consider releasing more water into the river” Collector M. Rajendran said.

Of the 2,000 cusecs let into the river, 1,000 cusecs was channelled through the power generation unit of the TNEB, starting the operation of the 7.5-MW unit, which was dormant for several months.
