Vegetable prices continue to slide

Staff Reporter

Vendors expect price rise due to crop damage

PUDUCHERRY: The price of almost all staple vegetables, except tomatoes, carrots and beans, has been on the decline in the last few weeks. Incessant rains have, however, resulted in the rise in the price of certain vegetables.

Vegetable vendors said that the cost of vegetables had become almost normal following smooth supply. However, the prices of tomatoes, carrots and beans increased following the rains.

The retail rate of a kg of tomatoes, which was Rs.15 before the rains, was now Rs.22.

The prices of vegetables were as follows: onion – Rs.15, carrot – Rs.26, cauliflower – Rs.15, lady’s finger – Rs.16, brinjal – Rs.20, beans – Rs.30, cabbage – Rs.10, radish – Rs.7, small onions – Rs.24, potato – Rs.11, beet root – Rs.12 and bitter gourd – Rs.16.

The vendors expect a rise in the prices of vegetables in the coming weeks due to rain-inflicted damage to crops in Tamil Nadu.
