Re-polling in Madhya Pradesh peaceful

Over 63 per cent of electorate cast their votes

Complaints of electoral irregularities were made

Reasons also included errors by polling staff

Bhopal: Re-polling at 31 polling booths spread over 14 Assembly constituencies in Madhya Pradesh passed off peacefully on Sunday with 63.35 per cent of electorate casting their votes, officials said.

The Election Commission of India ordered a re-poll at these places after complaints of electoral irregularities and defects in electronic voting machines (EVMs) during the polling, Madhya Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer J. S. Mathur said.

The State went to polls on Thursday to elect a new 230-member State Legislative Assembly.

The re-poll was ordered on the basis of reports provided by various district administrations to the Commission. The reasons for re-poll, he said, included failure and damage of the EVMs, violence at booths and errors by polling staff.

Re-poll was held at 13 booths in Bhind, six in Morena, three in Tikamgarh, two in Indore and one each in Sagar, Shajapur, Shivpuri, Jabalpur, Rajgarh, Singrauli and Chhatarpur districts.

BSP candidate held

The Bahujan Samaj Party candidate from Madhya Pradesh’s Sumawali constituency was arrested on Sunday for violating the model code of conduct during re-poll, the police said.

While eye-witnesses claimed BSP candidate Ajab Singh Kushwah was trying to lure voters by distributing money among them, Morena police Superintendent Santosh Kumar Singh said he was arrested for campaigning during re-polling. “Kushwah and his driver were arrested and the vehicle in which they had reached the polling booth was seized,” Mr. Singh said. Three people found roaming near the polling booth with illegal weapons were also arrested. -- IANS
