They will be introduced in Madurai, Tiruchi in January CHENNAI: The Postal Department will launch distribution of ‘proof of residence’ cards in Coimbatore in the first week of next month, M.S. Ramanujan, Postmaster-General, Chennai City. Mr. Ramanujan told The Hindu that following the success of the scheme in the city, the Department decided to extend it to other places. In January, the cards would be introduced in Madurai and Tiruchi. As for the distribution of the cards in Chennai, Mr. Ramanujan said the Department had so far distributed the cards to 10,000 persons. It printed 50,000 applications, and the entire lot had been taken. The Department was now receiving and verifying 40,000 applications. The cards would be issued soon. With the increased demand for the cards, the Department decided to print nearly 1 lakh applications. New serviceThe Department would also introduce ‘World Net Express’ next month. For this, it had signed a memorandum of understanding with DHL, an international courier company. The Department would distribute gift articles, and DHL would take up the work of delivery. This service would be available in all major post offices in Chennai.
