Railways in trouble

Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI: Yere Goud’s resilient unbeaten half-century kept Railways’ hopes alive after the host stumbled initially in the Ranji Trophy Super League tie against Uttar Pradesh at the Karnail Singh Stadium here on Sunday.

U.P. rode on the good work of its batsmen to score a challenging total of 346 in its first innings. Railways, in reply, was in trouble as it took lunch at 12 for four before struggling to reach 118 for five on day two. Now it needs 79 more runs to avoid follow-on.

The visiting side’s bowling trump card R.P. Singh displayed an accurate spell of seam bowling to make mincemeat of the Railways top order. In the first over of the innings, he had Sanjay Bangar caught behind and struck Harshad Rawle’s stumps.

Milind Tamhane chipped Bhuvneshwar Kumar to R.P. Singh at fine-leg and a few overs later the left-armer castled Sanjib Sanyal.

Goud once again turned out to be the Man Friday for Railways as he survived a few close calls to hold one end intact. With single-minded devotion of staying put at the wicket he brought up his 50 (128 balls, 8x4s) and built a life-infusing partnership worth 60 runs with Karan Sharma. He erected another unbroken stand of 46 runs with Mahesh Rawat before Railways heaved a sigh of relief as stumps were drawn early because of bad light.

The Railways coach Abhay Sharma acknowledged the gravity of the situation. “It’s difficult, we need partnerships to get out of the situation. But it’s not impossible as we have done it before,” he said.

In the morning, Praveen Kumar swung his bat to good effect as he added 47 runs to his overnight score 51 before perishing to an easy catch by Sanyal off Bangar just two runs short of his century The scores:
