CHENNAI: Fifty-seven children of an orphanage in West Tambaram were hospitalised Sunday morning after they complained of vomiting and diarrhoea. They were discharged by the evening. Udhavum Ullam, the orphanage-cum-old age home located in Lakshmipuram, West Tambaram, has 57 children and 40 senior citizens as residents. Thuraimugalakshmi (89), the founder of the establishment, told The Hindu that 57 children under the age of 12 years complained of vomiting and diarrhoea from Saturday night. They were admitted to the Chrompet Government Hospital on Sunday morning. “As there is water stagnation around the home due to the heavy rain, we accepted food packets from outside and gave the children. It was, perhaps, of poor quality,” she said. Moreover, sewage had mixed with the rain water and a few animals were found dead. The carcasses were cleared only on Sunday, she said. Hospital authorities said that the children were given first aid and some were given glucose. “The children suffered from food poisoning after having upma on Saturday night. We gave all the necessary treatment in the morning and they were discharged by evening,” added a duty medical officer.
