Bangalore’s Lakshmishree, Pooja of Harihar win painting contest

Imagination of participants comes in for praise at Young World event

Proud: A.J.S. Lakshmishree and Pooja. S. Kanade, the winners of The Hindu Young World On-the-Spot Painting Competition in Bangalore on Sunday.

BANGALORE: A.J.S. Lakshmishree and Pooja. S. Kanade won the first prize in the junior and senior categories, respectively, at the finals of The Hindu Young World On-the-Spot Painting Competition held at St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School here on Sunday.

Lakshmishree, a seventh standard student of Bethesda School, Bangalore, said that she was happy when the topic was announced. The topic for the junior category was “A visit to the circus”. She said that she had vivid memories of the circus. “Clowns bring a smile to my face and my painting had about six of them, besides a lion, a trapeze artist and a couple of elephants,” she said.

Pooja, an eighth standard student of M.K.E.T.’s Lakshmanrao Kirloskar’s CBSE School, Harihar in Davangere district, said that the topic was easy and she was confident of winning a prize. The topic for the seniors was “Deforestation” and Pooja said that she was aware of the effects of deforestation. “My painting had two parts. In the first part, I showed what greenery means to me and in the other I depicted the effects of deforestations,” she said. Both Lakshmishree and Pooja received cash prize of Rs. 1,250 each and certificates.

Ashrith. V. of Sri Aurobindo Vidya Mandir, Basaveshwaranagar, Bangalore, came second, while Madhu. M. of Premier High School, Srirampuram, Bangalore, stood third in the junior category. In the senior category, R. Vijay Kumar of Shanthiniketan Trust School, Bannerghatta Road, Bangalore, won the second place while M. Sushma of Carmel School, Padmanabhanagar, Bangalore, took the third place. The second and third prize winners in both categories received cash prizes of Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 750 respectively and certificates from The Hindu. They also received gift hampers from Lotte BooProo.

Assistant Secretary of Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat Harish J. Padmanabha, who gave away the prizes, appreciated the creativity and imagination of the participants and urged them to visit art galleries and museums to get more exposure.

V.R.C. Shekar, Nagappa Badiger, Srinidhi Seshadri and Madhu. D., judged the competition. They said that the technique and concept of the paintings was excellent.

The finalists included children from Tumkur, Davangere, Harihar and Bellary in Karnataka, Hosur in Tamil Nadu and Hindupur in Andhra Pradesh. The event was presented by Lotte BooProo. Sree Nandhana Palace sponsored the snacks. The consolation prize winners are as follows. In the junior category: K. Bhavana, P. J. Mruthula Jayan, Aneesha Johnson, S. Sweta, Sougata Hanra, Aishwarya. B. S., and V. Shruthi. In the senior category: Shruthi. S., T. N. Harshitha, Tradip Karmakar, Manasa Vinodkumar, Renu. P. B., S. Swathi and S. Deepika.
