Andhra Pradesh
A maintenance charge of Rs.2 in air-conditioned theatres and Re.1 in non-AC theatres is being collected on each ticket, but most of the theatres in the city, barring a handful, have stinking toilets. There is a need to have a toll-free number for sanitation, like 100 for police and 101 for fire. Since entertainment tax doesn’t apply to maintenance charges being collected, only the licensing authority can take action. It is time some action is initiated in this regard. C. Chandrasekhar Chuttugunta, Vijayawada. Prevent attacksThe terror attacks on hotels and other public places in Mumbai are a wake-up call to every one in the city, including the police. It is easy to think that Vijayawada is quite unlikely to be a target for terrorists, but this very attitude may encourage terrorist groups to target the city. The need of the hour is not a knee-jerk reaction but a well-thought out and planned strategy to prevent Mumbai-like occurrences. It has been reported in these columns that hoteliers met the Commissioner of Police and sought his help in training their security guards in handling the guest and checking the baggage. The Commissioner Police should ensure that the security guards of not just hotels but other public places like malls and cinema halls should also be trained to prevent terror attacks. S.T.K. Parthasarathi Pinnamaneni Polyclinic Road, Vijayawada Don’t shift bank branchesIt is observed that every now and then many banks, including nationalised banks, are shifting the premises of their branches, as they are located in rented accommodations. The frequent change of addresses of bank branches is causing a lot of inconvenience to the regular customers. Nowadays, almost all banks are offering housing loans to their customers. One wonders, as what prevents the bankers from constructing their own buildings for their branches? The bankers are requested not to change their branches from one premises to another frequently and focus on providing own buildings to the branches, instead of running them in rented accommodations. A. Pattabhi Ajith Singh Nagar, Vijayawada Unofficial lorry standConsequent upon the closure of the lorry stand at Bhavanipuram, the bypass road from Bala Yesu church to Atkinson School crossroad has become the unofficial lorry stand. Vehicles from different places are parked at random. Some vehicles carrying merchandise like iron rods and asbestos sheets are occupying major part of the road. A few traders converted this road into an unloading zone by unloading the goods from lorries to mini vans and auto-rickshaw trolleys, while a few others are loading goods on the road. There is every possibility for road accidents at this stretch, particularly during night times. The officials concerned are requested to unleash the whip on the erring traders. C. Ram Mohun Old HB Colony, Vijayawada
