Post office needs improvement

The post office on Arunachalam Main Road at Saligramam is located in a cramped first-floor flat and lacks proper access. Not more than 10 people can transact business at a time. To get their pension, the aged have to climb a narrow and steep staircase. Senior citizens can be seen sitting on the steps, as no space is available in the hall. The Postal Department is requested to move this post office to some other place.

Publicise proposal to form new corporations

The CMDA organised a meeting at Tambaram on November 15 to elicit public opinion on the proposal to form a south Chennai Corporation. It was not given due publicity, so only a few turned up. It is an irony that politicians outnumbered representatives of welfare organisations. Most of the councillors present did not even have the basic knowledge such as the area of operation and powers of civic bodies; a majority of them projected their personal or party interests.

The time left at the disposal of the representatives of the welfare organisations was not sufficient to analyse the pros and cons of the proposal and air their views. To say that the whole exercise is a fiasco may not be an exaggeration, as the audience left without any inkling of what was in store.

We request the CMDA to give an extensive publicity in English and vernacular dailies to the proposal.

Publish a traffic guide

A guide in English and Tamil, setting forth the traffic rules and regulations, signs and signals and the punishment for violations, is a long-felt need of road-users. Such a publication will benefit drivers and others. The traffic police should publish the guide and make it available at all traffic police stations, bus depots and other places of public utility.

Egmore station needs additional staircase

The Egmore station was recently remodelled, after the suburban lines between Tambaram and Egmore were made broad-gauge. But, railway authorities have failed to take note of an important problem.

Passengers who alight on the suburban platforms 10 and 11 have to climb the staircase to reach the exit in the eastern and western ends. The staircase on these platforms is unable to take in thousands of passengers. Though the number of passengers has increased manifold, there is still only one staircase. This causes a lot of hardship not only to the commuters but also to those who want to reach the other side of the station, from the east to the west. So the Railways must build an additional staircase at the end of the eastern side of the over-bridge.

Auto stands pose problems

Of late, residents come across a sudden mushrooming of autorickshaw stands at street corners, at the end of main roads and at junctions. Sometime back, I wrote to the traffic police, seeking a clarification whether such stands at street corners were authorised, but I received no response. These stands lead to traffic blocks, which often result in heated exchanges between autorickshaw drivers and motorists. When I approached a traffic constable for help on such an occasion, he advised me not to antagonise the drivers, who he said were “rowdies in khaki dress.”

One hopes the Commissioner of Police will initiate steps to regulate the unauthorised stands.

Increase concession in tourist hotels

The Tamil Nadu government offers senior citizens a 20 per cent concession while they stay in Tamil Nadu Tourist Hotels. It will be worthwhile if the government considers increasing this to 30 per cent as in the case of railway fares.

The norms should be simplified. Some hotels ask the senior citizens to settle their dues and avail themselves of the concession in their head office. This practice should be discontinued, and the dues settled with concession in the hotel itself.

Illuminate roads

Many vehicles use 100 Feet Road (Jawaharlal Nehru Road). But streetlights, from the CMBT bus stop to Anna Nagar West, are poorly maintained. In the evening, these lamps flicker because of the low voltage. Since these places are congested with heavy traffic, they require sufficient lighting.
