Crop damage put at Rs. 9 crore

PERAMBALUR: Standing crops, including maize, paddy and cotton on 60,000 hectares in the district have been damaged by the rain. The damage has been estimated at about Rs.9 crore, Union Minister of Information Technology and Communications A. Raja said.
Addressing presspersons after inspecting the rain-hit areas in the district on Sunday, Mr. Raja said that cotton on 17,754 hectares; maize on 34,278 hectares; groundnut on 1,574 hectares; paddy on 1,020 hectares had been damaged.
On the horticultural crops, he said that onion on 2,237 hectares; chilly on 147 hectares; turmeric on 210 hectares and banana on 87 hectares had been completely damaged by the rain.
A survey conducted in the district had estimated the value of the loss of maize crop at Rs.1.16 crore; cotton at Rs. 80 lakh; groundnut at Rs.21 lakh; paddy at Rs.57 lakh. The value of the loss of horticultural crops has been put at about Rs.12 lakh, he added. Pointing out that most of the crops were nearing harvest, he said.
