India wins opening round

NEW DELHI: World junior champion Abhijeet Gupta set the pace and World under-16 champion B. Adhiban provided the momentum as India raced away to a convincing 2.5-1.5 victory over pre-match favourite Armenia in opening round of the Friendship chess series at the Russian Cultural Centre here on Sunday.

The results: Armenia lost to India 1.5-2.5 (Zaven Andriasian lost to Abhijeet Gupta; Hrant Melkumyan drew with S. Arun Prasad; Aveitk Grigoryan bt G. Rohit; B. Adhiban bt Samvel Ter Sahakyan). — Special Correspondent
