PUDUCHERRY: The territorial administration has declared Puducherry and Karaikal regions as flood-affected, Chief Minister V. Vaithilingam said. In a statement here, he said that taking into account the magnitude of damage caused, the government had declared the two regions flood-affected. The government had sought assistance to the tune of Rs.10 crore from the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund to provide immediate relief to the affected families. All the departments concerned were in the process of assessing damage caused to various sectors, Mr. Vaithilingam said, adding that additional funds would be sought for providing compensation to the families after they submit a report. Preliminary estimates revealed that the cyclone had caused damage to the tune of more than Rs. 100 crore, he said. The Puducherry region alone recorded a total rainfall of 426 mm on November 27 and 28, which was unprecedented. The heavy rain had damaged 10,000 hectares of agricultural land in Puducherry and 6,100 hectares in Karaikal. Four persons were killed, three alone in Puducherry, and another 15 injured in the rain. The Revenue Department had distributed more than 6 lakh food packets to the families living in low-lying areas, Mr. Vaithilingam said.
