Muthupettai situation under control
Special Correspondent
TIRUVARUR: The situation at Muthupettai in Tiruvarur district, where the police opened fire in air to quell a mob that indulged in violence on Sunday evening, is under control.
The mob allegedly ransacked the town panchayat office, the house of town panchayat chairman M.S. Karthik, damaged a police jeep and indulged in stone throwing, injuring police personnel.
The police said the rain-affected residents of Marudinkavali had been demanding that Minister for Dairy Development U. Mathivannan visit their area, but he did not do so after visiting Muthupet.
Mr. Mathivanan, who visited Muthupettai, appealed to people not to be misled by statements by some politicians.
The police opened fire to restore order after some people, allegedly led by the CPI and other parties, indulged in violence.
Relief was provided to people in a proper way.
