CPI(M) office set ablaze

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: The tribal agitation against alleged police excesses in West Bengal’s Paschim Medinipur district took a violent turn on Monday with the protesters setting ablaze an office of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) near Lalgarh.

Lalgarh and other parts of the district’s Jhargram subdivision have been isolated from the rest of the district, with roads leading to the area dug up and roadblocks put up at several places by those behind the agitation that is continuing for more than three weeks. The “people’s committee” that is spearheading the agitation has threatened to intensify the movement till the local administration sits for talks with the protesters over their demands in the next four days, according to reports reaching here. Obstructions will be set up on railway tracks and highways passing through the district, it warned.

Those behind the agitation have been insisting that talks be held at Dalilpur chak in the Lalgarh area where the first protests against alleged police atrocities on the local people took place.

District authorities have said they are keen on talks with the protesters but the venue should be at an alternative site within the premises of the administration. The demands of the committee include a public apology by the local police for the “excesses “committed on people during raids to track down those responsible for the IED blast that narrowly missed Chief Minister ’s convoy.
