Clearance awaited on award to ex-Bhutan King

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: Visva Bharati authorities have withdrawn for the moment the name of the former King of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuk, from the list of recipients of the university’s highest award, “Deshikottama.”

“At the moment it [conferring the award to Jigme Singye Wangchuk] has been withdrawn as the clearances have not come from the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of External Affairs,” Vice-Chancellor, Rajat Kanta Ray, told The Hindu over telephone from Santiniketan on Monday. The award is to be conferred at the convocation of the university on December 6.
