Kerala beats J & K

Principal Correspondent

PALAKKAD: Kerala crushed Jammu & Kashmir by eight wickets with a day to spare to post its first victory in the Ranji Trophy Plate Group ‘A’ league at the Fort Maidan here on Monday.

The host needed just 85 to win after bowling Jammu out for 199 shortly before tea on the third day.

Collapsing again

The visiting side, which resumed at 26 for one, saw its batting collapse for the second time in the match. Only Ian Dev Singh (61) and Manoj Joglekar (44) showed some fight against a Kerala bowling attack that had been sensing victory after taking a lead of 115.

Ian added 62 for the second wicket with Parvez Ganai and 43 for the third with Joglekar. It was his dismissal, by Tinu Yohannan, at 108 that signalled the beginning of the end of the Jammu second innings. From 108 for two, the visiting side slid to 199 all out.

The wickets were shared by the host bowlers with medium-pacer K. Anil Kumar taking three.

Kerala now has nine points with a game against Jharkhand left. It is in the fourth position, behind Himachal Pradesh, Goa and Haryana. Jammu is placed at the bottom of the six-team group with one point.

The Kerala skipper, Sony K. Cheruvathur, said his team would go all out for a victory against Jharkhand.

“This win could not have come at a better time and I thought every player contributed,” he said. “Of course, it was Rohan and Tinu who really brought us back into the match. The way Rohan batted with the tail was remarkable.”
