Bus journey on the web
New Delhi: Commuters in the national capital can now plan their journey within the city on state-run air-conditioned buses in advance at the click of a mouse.
The Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System has developed a web-based Public Information System (PIS) through which commuters can view the position of a bus and its expected time of arrival at a given bus stop. For this, they can access www.dimts.in or www.dimits.in/passengerinfo.html .
The system uses Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to determine real-time information about the bus. On the basis of the current position, speed and scheduled stops en route, it predicts the expected time of arrival at a destination.
Twenty-five air-conditioned buses plying on nine routes now have GPS devices. The position of a bus will be determined in terms of latitude and longitude at a given point of time. The information is transmitted to a central server through a GPRS connection. Based on a pre-configured route and the current position of the bus, the time likely to be taken to reach subsequent bus stops is calculated.
PIS was introduced earlier on 88 non-air-conditioned buses and 10 air-conditioned buses, where system-generated information about expected time of arrival was disseminated to commuters through LED boards installed at bus stops. — PTI
