Better behaviour expected of him, says Kerala CM

Staff Reporter

We went because it is Sandeep’s family

BANGALORE: Stung by the hostile reception he got at the slain NSG commando Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s residence here on Sunday, Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said on Monday that “a soldier’s father should have displayed better behaviour.”

Turned away

Mr. Achuthanandan and his Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan were turned away by K. Unnikrishnan when they came to condole the death of his only son, who had been killed by terrorists in Mumbai. They landed in Bangalore for a stopover while returning to Thiruvananthapuram after attending the CPI(M) Polit Bureau meeting in Delhi.

Though Mr. Unnikrishnan had stridently made it clear that he did not want any politician in his house, the two leaders came to his residence at the ISRO Layout in Yelahanka on Sunday evening. Overwrought scenes followed, which were reported by the media.

On Monday, Mr. Achuthanandan told a news channel: “He [Mr. Unnikrishnan] says that the Kerala CM didn’t come whereas the Karnataka CM came in the morning … Is there a rule that the CMs of Kerala and Karnataka should be there at the same time? … It is Sandeep’s family, that is why we went. A soldier’s father should have had the sense to understand that.”
