Mullaperiyar dam unsafe: panel chief
Special Correspondent
KOCHI: Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Water Resources R. Sambasiva Rao has said the 113-year-old Mullaperiyar dam is unsafe.
“We have found that the dam is not secure,” Mr. Sambasiva Rao told mediapersons on Tuesday after nine members of the committee heard the views of the Kerala government. The panel had on Monday visited the masonry dam, which is located in Idukki district and which is a bone of contention between Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
Mr. Sambasiva Rao pointed out that the normal lifespan of a dam was around 50 years, but Mullaperiyar had survived for 113 years. The committee had been apprised of the fears of the people in five districts living downstream of the dam. Experts from Delhi and Roorkhee IITs too had expressed their doubts about the longevity of the dam.
He said the committee would sit together with experts from the Central Water Commission in New Delhi soon and present its report to the Central government and Parliament.
