ART centre at Stanley Hospital

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Government Stanley Hospital will open an anti-retroviral therapy centre on its premises for the benefit of north Chennai residents. The announcement was made by the hospital authorities at a function organised as part of the World AIDS Day on Monday.

Hitherto, persons approaching the hospital for the therapy were directed to the Tambaram Sanatorium.

The Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society will fund the centre, said N. Rajakumar, Head of the Department of Transfusion Medicine.

The Department, along with the Department of Sexually Transmitted Diseases, organised street plays on Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) and HIV, and on voluntary blood donation, to drive home the message that HIV could also be transmitted through blood transfusion.

In other parts of the city, street plays, inspiring talks by people living with HIV/AIDS, screening of films and meetings by Red Ribbon Clubs were organised.

At Oxford Bookstore at Nungambakkam, Noori, head of South India Positive Network, recalled her experiences. She overcame the odds by fighting the stigma attached to AIDS, she said.
