PUDUCHERRY: Coastal security in Kariakal will be further strengthened with the establishment of one more marine police station.

Shortly after holding a meeting to review internal security, Home Minister E. Valsaraj said that the Police Department had already set in process the establishment of an additional marine police station at Keelangathoor in Kariakal, following approval given by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

“The Public Works Department has been entrusted with the task of constructing the station at an estimated cost of Rs. 3.3 crore,” he told The Hindu. The government had sent a proposal to the Ministry of Home Affairs for its approval to set up a marine police station at Puducherry. Two medium-sized crafts and one small boat meant for the stations would become operational by March, he said.

A senior police officer said that the department would soon send a proposal to the government for setting up marine police station outposts in the Mahe and Yanam regions.

The Ministry had sanctioned 20 more posts for the marine police stations, he said, adding that they had sought sanction for 23 more posts. Personnel from the Coast Guard would provide training in navigation and handling security equipment.

In a release, the Minister said that the meeting took stock of the security scenario in the Puducherry and Karaikal regions, in the wake of recent terror attacks in Mumbai. The meeting decided to intensify patrolling and hold periodic consultation with community liaison groups formed in coastal villages and other areas. It also decided to strengthen the police control room with vehicle tracking and monitoring facilities, and zonal screening. More arms and ammunitions would be procured to strengthen the police force, the release said.
