TDP, Left parties stage protest

Demand rollback of petrol price hike

VIZIANAGARAM: TDP and Left parties on Tuesday staged a dharna at the tehsildar office here demanding that the Centre cut the prices of petrol by Rs. 15 per litre and diesel by Rs.10 per litre.

CPI district council secretary P. Kameswara Rao said the Centre had increased petrol and diesel prices eight times and LPG three times in the last four-and-half years. Giving dates and the amount increased, he said that the rates prevailed as on June 14, 2004 in Vizianagaram town were: petrol Rs. 37.84, diesel Rs. 24.49 and LPG Rs. 263. Now, the rates are: petrol Rs.56.65, diesel Rs.38.25 and LPG Rs. 354.42.

The common man was seriously affected, he said and added that though crude oil prices in the international market dropped considerably the government had not rolled back the prices of fuel. He said the TDP-Left combine would intensify agitation if the prices were not reduced.

Later, they submitted a memorandum to Ramana Murty, tehsildar. Prasadula Ramakrishna (TDP), P. Ramanamma (CPI-M), B. Suribabu (CPI) and others were participated in the dharna.

Rajahmundry: Left parties and TDP held dharna in front of the Sub-Collector’s office on Tuesday. Speaking on the occasion the leaders of the CPI and CPI (M) and TDP said in June when petroleum products in international market reached $130 a barrel, the Union Government hiked Rs. 5 on petrol, Rs.3 on diesel and Rs.50 on LPG.

However, on December 1 barrel rate has come down to $ 50. But, petrol prices were not reduced.

The leaders wanted to know how the government has reduced aviation turbo fuel rate, which is used for aviation purpose. Former minister Gorantla Butchaiah Chowdary said the government should roll back prices immediately. TDP leaders Adireddy Apparao, B. Satyanarayana Prasad, Kuruganti Satish and others participated. CPI leaders Meesala Satyanarayana and Chittoori Prabhakar Chowdary, CPM leaders T.S. Prakash and T. Arun and others participated in dharna.
