Thousands participate in ‘Chakra Snanam’

Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI: Thousands of devotees took part in the ‘Chakra Snanam’ performed on the final day of the Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Kartheeka Brahmotsavams at Tiruchanur here on Tuesday. The event is popular as ‘Panchami Theertham’ as it falls on the ‘Panchami’ day every year as per Hindu almanac.

Devotees occupied every inch of available space in and around ‘Padma Sarovaram’, the temple tank where the event was conducted amid great fanfare. According to mythology, the goddess was born in a lotus in this tank on this very day and hence the event is celebrated as her birthday.

After giving a celestial bath to the deity at the mandapam on the bank, the priests carried her representative ‘Sudarsana Chakra’ into the tank and gave it a holy dip amid chanting from scriptures, when hordes of devotees took a plunge into the water. It is believed that taking a dip simultaneously with the idol will rid one of all ailments and misfortune.

Earlier, a set of auspicious items (‘Padi’) was carried by priests on elephant-back from the hill shrine of Tirumala as a gift from Lord Venkateswara to His consort on Her birthday.
