Move to screen Panorama films in different places

Prakash Kamat

PANAJI: The Directorate of Film Festivals (DFF) is considering to take the Panorama films screened at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) to different parts of the country.

Talking to journalists on Tuesday ahead of the last day of IFFI 2008 here, DFF Director S. M. Khan said, “We have started thinking process in this regard. But our plans can succeed provided the States cooperate and take active interest in holding such a Panorama film festival.”

Mr. Khan said, “We should take these films to places like say North East, North India, Kolkata and in south Indian cities like Chennai and Hyderabad.”

The Panorama films festival will begin in Delhi on December 11 at Siri Fort.

Controversy

As regards the controversy surrounding Goa as the permanent venue, Mr. Khan said he was not in a position to comment as it had to be decided by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting. The Ministry signs a memorandum of understanding in this regard every year with the Goa government, the DFF and the Entertainment Society of Goa, the government’s entertainment body which co-hosts the IFFI with DFF.

“As regards Goa I can only say, Goa is a good venue, I hope it will continue to hold IFFI,” he said. “We would of course consider views about the venue given by filmmakers of repute,” when it was pointed out that filmmaker Adoor Gopalkrishnan had lauded Goa for creating very good infrastructure for the IFFI.
