Vegetable prices go up

Special Correspondent

THANJAVUR: Vegetables have become dearer in Thanjavur following the continuous rains in the State.

Price of tomato per kg was hovering between Rs. 38 and Rs. 40 on Tuesday as against the normal price of Rs. 15.

Ordinary onion costs Rs. 36 per kg and Bellary onion Rs. 18-20. Brinjal costs Rs. 28-30 per kg. Prices of carrot, chow chow and cabbage have skyrocketed.

Scant arrivals

The upward trend in prices is attributed to less arrivals from places like Oddanchathiram and local crop damage.

Banana cheap

The only vegetable which is costing less is banana. As there is a devastation of plantain groves due to cyclone Nisha, bunches of bananas have come for distress sale.

Price of a single banana (green used for cooking) is 50 paise.

Due to damage caused to betel vines in Thiruvaiyaru and Papanasam, prices of betel leaves have also gone up. One betel leaf costs Re. 1. “Prices may come down once the arrival of vegetables become normal,” said the vendors.
