One held for ‘violating’ code

BERHAMPUR: Polling for the two urban bodies in communal violence hit Kandhamal district passed off peacefully on Tuesday.

Voters voted for the candidates to be elected to the Phulbani municipality and G.Udaygiri Notified Area Council (NAC). The fate of 109 candidates contesting the polls in these two places are now packed in the Electronic Voting machines. Counting would be done on Wednesday.

The polling was done amidst tight security.

At G.Udaygiri one person was arrested for campaigning in the premises of a booth. The police officials took 10 persons into custody at Phulbani due to allegations of violation of electoral model code of conduct against them.

Voters voted in 28 booths in Phulbani and 12 booths at G.Udaygiri. The administration had declared 19 booths as extra sensitive and the rest nine booths as sensitive in Phulbani.

Similarly four booths at G.Udaygiri were extra sensitive.

Security was extra tight at G.Udaygiri which had faced much communal violence in recent past.

The Baliguda sub-collector, R.V.Krishnan monitored the polling process amidst the deployment of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). A special striking force was also kept ready at G.Udaygiri to face any untoward incidents. But no cases of law and order problem were reported from both places.

The polling rate was slightly high at G.Udaygiri than Phulbani.

By 2 p.m. the voting was over by 50 per cent at G.Udaygiri while in Phulbani it was around 35 per cent.
