One crore to form human chain

For Congress foundation day celebrations on December 28

HYDERABAD: Close to one crore people are proposed to be mobilised to form a human chain in the State to mark the Congress party’s foundation day celebrations on December 28.

The programme will witness participation of not only the Congress cadre, but also people from a cross section of society. The human chain is being organised to highlight the achievements of the UPA and the Congress governments in the last four-and-a-half years.

The party is taking enough care to see that people are not inconvenienced by the event. “We are taking every care to see that there will be no traffic snarls or scope for law and order problems,” AP Congress Committee president D. Srinivas told reporters on Tuesday. He said for the twin cities, the party had asked its city unit to arrange the programme in such a manner that life is not affected. Participants will take a pledge and denounce the recent terror attacks in Mumbai, the APCC chief said, adding that all the elected representatives, along with freedom-fighters would participate.

He also announced that the party would be organising fortnight-long ‘welfare celebrations’ (Samkshema utsavalu) from January 2 in the State to explain to the people the initiatives on welfare front. The APCC chief said he would hold a meeting with the district and town Congress committee presidents along with the PCC executive on December 8, which will be attended by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

New incumbents

Meanwhile, former Telugu Desam Party legislator Jonna Suryanarayana, who was with Praja Rajyam for a brief period switched sides on Tuesday by formally taking membership of the Congress party in the presence of the Chief Minister and Mr. Srinivas. TDP municipal councillor S. Md. Ismail, former Superintendent of Police Ilyas Sait and a retired principal Palle Chandrasekhara Reddy also joined the Congress.
