EC drops complaint

J. Venkatesan

New Delhi: The Election Commission on Tuesday dropped the proceedings against Petroleum Minister Murli Deora on a complaint from the Bharatiya Janata Party, which alleged that he violated the Model Code of Conduct by announcing that the prices of petroleum products would be reduced after the Assembly elections.

Responding to the Commission’s notice, Mr. Deora had said: “Any contemplation of a possible reduction of prices of petroleum products in a volatile market cannot, by any stretch of imagination, amount to a financial grant or promise thereof and that he had not violated the Model Code of Conduct.”

Deputy Election Commissioner R. Balakrishnan told reporters that the Commission, after studying Mr. Deora’s reply and witnessing the video footage of the Minister’s statement, concluded that he had not violated the Model Code of Conduct in this matter and dropped the proceedings.
