Guwahati: The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), an organisation fighting for farmers’ rights in Assam, has announced the formation of an “unarmed suicide squad” to resist the “plundering” of the State’s natural resources. The organisation has threatened self-immolation by six of its members, including general secretary Akhil Kumar Gogoi, if the Oil India Limited (OIL) goes ahead with its proposal to conduct a seismic survey of the Brahmaputra river-bed in search of crude oil. The KMSS and several other organisations have opposed the survey fearing an adverse impact on the river-dolphin population, fishes and other aquatic life in the Brahmaputra, on which some 39 lakh people depend for their livelihood. Mr. Gogoi announced the formation of a mass resistance army on the lines of the Asom Sena of the All-Assam Students’ Union and Lachit Sena of the All Tai-Ahom Students’ Union to resist the survey. They have named it the Bishnu Rabha Gana Pratirodh Bahini.
