Subsidy for settling in the countryside

The Romanian government launched a new programme on Wednesday to encourage young people to settle in the countryside.

Under the National Rural Development Programme (PNDR), Romanian youths who want to settle in the countryside would be entitled to a non-disbursable EU fund totalling over 84 million euros ($106 million).

The largest non-disbursable fund is designed to finance the “Young Farmers Settlement” project, under which each farm gets about 25,000 euros ($31,575). The first session for lodging projects takes place between December 3 2008 - February 2, 2009.

Romania’s agriculture is believed to have tremendous potential, but its young people in the rural areas either leave for big cities, or go abroad to look for job, turning its villages into shelters for the elders and causing its farmland to lie waste. — Xinhua
