Grand show to herald New Year

KOCHI: The city is preparing for the grand show to end the year. The eight-day-long Christmas and New Year celebrations titled Winter Splashes 2008 is being organised jointly by the District Administration and the District Tourism Development Council.

Registration has already begun for the competitions, like cinematic song and Western song, which are open to teams from anywhere in the State.

Competitions are being held at three venues – Marine Drive, Children’s Park and Durbar Hall Grounds. Even though the festival will start on December 24, the competitions will start only by December 28.

Teams having members from seven to ten can take part in the competitions, winners of which will get cash prizes, mementos and certificates.

On the last day of the year, children will rule the floor. For those aged below 12 years, Winter Splash Prince and Winter Splash Princess competitions will be held at the Children’s Park.

The last date for registering for these competitions will be December 15.

Details about the festival are available from the camp office of the District Collector or the office of Lifeline Event Makers (phone: 3912188).

But Winter Splashes is not just about competitions. It is about lots of music and time to try out different flavours to tickle the taste palettes.

The food festival will offer a wide choice of cakes at the Baker’s Fest, while Ice-cream corner, snacks corner, Thai Food Festival and fruityard will be other specialties of the venue.

The Marine Drive venue will also have nearly 300 stalls promoting tourism and related exhibits. Cultural programmes will be held at the helipad on evenings.

Dance performances by film actors Kavya Madhavan and Ramya Nambisan, ghazal by Shahabaz Aman and Gayatri, performances by playback singer Sreenivas and drummer Sivamoni, instrumental fusion by Balabhaskar and Mattannur Sankarankutty and flute recital by Raj Krishnan will be highlights of the cultural evenings.

Registrations for the counters for the food festival have started. K.R. Bake’s took the first stall, as its owner K.R. Balan signed the agreement at the Collector’s camp office the other day.
