‘Free IT sector from monopolistic practices’

Thrissur: Social activist K. Venu has called for efforts to liberate the information technology sector from monopolistic business practices and proprietary software.

He was addressing ‘A window to freedom’, a seminar on open source software organised here on Thursday by the Free Software Users’ Group. “The philosophy of free software movement is essential for society’s transformation and development,” he said.

A.D. Jayan, course coordinator of Costford; Sekhar Thanikkal; and Manoj Kumar, head of the department of computer science, Government Engineering College, Thrissur also spoke.

Hiran Venugopalan, Mahesh Mukundan, K.H. Husain, P. Suresh, Jain Basil Aliyas and Aswin Sasidharan led sessions on commonly used tools in GNU/Linux, installation of GNU/Linux, latest desktop patterns and computing in local language.

A few participants got GNU/Linux installed in their laptops at the seminar with the help of K. Devidas and Alex Poovathingal, students of Thrissur Government Engineering College. Nearly 300 people, mostly college students, took part.
