Court slaps fine on insurance company
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Thursday slapped a fine of Rs.25,000 on New India Assurance Company for filing a frivolous petition opposing grant of a compensation of Rs.1.25 lakh to the family of a cyclist who was run over by a truck in North-West Delhi in 1981.
A Motor Accident Claims Tribunal here had granted the compensation of Rs.1.25 lakh to the family of the deceased. The insurance company challenged the decision in the High Court, submitting that the Tribunal had erred in calculating the compensation. The victim is survived by his wife and two children.
Dismissing the plea of the insurance company, Justice V.B. Gupta imposed a fine of Rs.25,000 on it for filing a frivolous petition and wasting the precious time of the Court.
