The university has been without a full-time Vice-Chancellor for over a year Varsity accused of not presenting estimates for Rs. 100-crore special grant MYSORE: With the search committee, headed by the former Vice-Chancellor of Visvesvaraya Technological University K. Balaveera Reddy, constituted to recommend names of three candidates for the post of Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mysore, suggesting names of three academicians, hopes have risen among the academic community on a regular Vice-Chancellor. The state’s oldest university founded in 1916 remained without a full-time Vice-Chancellor for over a year. The academic community is apprehensive of the byelection to Maddur Assembly Constituency scheduled to be held on December 27 coming in the way of the government announcing the name of new vice-chancellor. It is said that the Department of Higher Education sought a clarification in this regard from State Election Commissioner M.N. Vidyashankar. Principal Secretary to the Department of Higher Education, C.S. Suranjana told The Hindu said that the election code of conduct would not come in the way of announcing the new vice-chancellor, as the process of selection had commenced long back. “The process of finalising the name will take some time and in all probability the name of new vice-chancellor will be announced soon,” he said. For the last 14 months, the university has been functioning under acting vice-chancellors. While one section of the academics is claiming that the absence of full-time vice-chancellor has affected both academic and development works, sources in university administration strongly deny the claims. It is alleged that the university failed to present estimates for the Rs. 100-crore special grant being given by the Union Government and the authorities have not started work on hostel complex of academic staff college and guest house. Denying the allegation, university authorities assert that the proposal sent by the university for making use of special grant had been accepted and the Ministry of Human Resources had asked for a detailed revised proposal to expedite the process. The search committee, which met on Tuesday in Bangalore, zeroed in on three candidates, after scanning the names of about 30 contenders. On getting the Governor’s assent, the name will be announced.
