Andhra Pradesh
Is it indifference or resilience?
The city is of late abuzz with candle light vigils, peace marches and messages of “solidarity” to the victims of Mumbai carnage. If it is an NGO today, it will be the turn of IT employees tomorrow. Whether or not these messages reach the victims’ families, every such catastrophe is nonetheless taken as an opportunity by the peace enthusiasts to come up with demonstrations.
While nobody can deny the comfort of relaxed nerves that peace brings along, this is by no measure an occasion to be complacent. People should have been reasonably angered with government’s failure becoming too obvious, and its representatives making nonchalant remarks about the ghastly incident. There should have been massive protests to give vent to the frustration and lack of faith piling up in people’s minds.
Instead, what we see now is only cloying messages devoid of innovation in method or text. Media is only adding to the stupor by describing ‘indifference’ as ‘resilience’ of the cities and offering wide coverage to the ‘candles’.
