Autorickshaw drivers go on strike

KOCHI: Autorickshaws plying in the city struck work from morning till evening on Thursday, in protest against the arrest of 21 autorickshaw drivers.

They withdrew the strike following an assurance that the police would look into their grievances.

This followed the autorickshaw drivers protesting against the reported decision by the police not to give preference to 32 autorickshaws which had paid Rs 1,500 to the Railways to operate from the pre-paid auto counter in the Ernakulam Junction Railway Station.

The vice-president of the Ernakulam District Auto Drivers’ Association (CITU) Sojan Antony said that trade unions had provided full support to the police in running the counter.

“But the police began treating autorickshaws who paid Rs. 1,500 to the Railways and those who did not pay the sum, on a par. This forced the drivers to protest, resulting in the police action. We later took out a march to the office of the City Police Commissioner, and he promised to look into the issue,” he said.
